- Full Texts - Many people find it helpful to have a full text, not necessarily to read cover to cover, but to fill in details where review books fall short. Choose one of the following:
- Review Books
- Pocket Medicine
- If you don't have it on your PDA, then you should probably have it in your pocket. It's a fixture in all of the resident's pockets and a great quick reference.
- An excellent general review in outline form.
- Serves as alternative to NMS, and is arguably more readable without leaving out essentials.
- Can serve as an alternative to a full text, it depends on your style of learning.
- Case Files Internal Medicine
- Read this after completing your outline book or full text to highlight high-yield info.
- Easy read w. short vignettes, you are guaranteed to see similar cases on the Shelf.
- First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship - Covers most topics you need to do well on the Shelf, but may need supplementation with a full text for detail.
- Blueprints Medicine
- Good overview, but not enough detail to replace a text or serve as your only review book.
- Question Books
- The consensus is that MKSAP books are the way to go for questions.
- Volumes 2 & 3 are different so if you have time, go through them both.
- Questions are a bit harder than the Shelf questions but more thorough than Pre-Test more manageable than Appleton & Lange.

- Do the 8 Medicine tests, excellent Shelf prep!
